Long-term noise exposures: A brief review
نویسنده
چکیده
Occupational regulations are developed to conserve the hearing of a worker noise-exposed for 8 h per day. Workers often work longer shifts. In order to account for longer exposures, regulators have adopted variations of the equal energy hypothesis in which the ear is modeled as an integrator of acoustic energy over time. Thus time and energy can be traded to produce equal hearing loss. This results in the exchange rate. (A 24 h period is assumed to be the integration period. Thus each worker begins their exposure anew at the start of the work day.) U.S. occupational regulations limit the 8 h exposure of workers to noise of 90 dBA or less. With every doubling of exposure time, the exposure level must decrease by an exchange rate of 5 dB (CFR, 29 1910.95). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends that workers not be exposed to more than 85 dBA for more than 8 h per day with an exchange rate is 3 dB (NIOSH, 1998). Three dB corresponds to a doubling of acoustic energy. In an effort to provideworkers with safe noise exposure levels in excess of 8 h industrial hygienists utilize an equation in conjunction with a 5 or 3 dB exchange rate (see Appendix A). As an example, the NIOSH Criteria Document (1998) in Table 1e1 lists a Permissible Exposure Level of 80 dBA for 25 h 24 min. There are occupations and situations where workers may be in an environment in which exposures may last 24 h or even longer. Examples include air craft carrier crew, oil platform workers and over-the-road truck drivers

P158: Epilepsy and Anxiety: A Brief Review
Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes people to have recurring seizures. The seizures happen when clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain send out the wrong signals. Up to 50 or 60% of patients with chronic epilepsy have various mood disorders including depression and anxiety. Although the affective and cognitive effects of epilepsy have long received attention, the anxiety spectru...

Background: This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of simultaneous formaldehyde (FA) and noise exposure on the sperm kinematic parameters sexual hormones in male mice. Materials and Methods: Forty eight NMRI adult male mice were randomly assigned to control group and experimental groups which were exposed to formaldehyde vapour (10 ppm) (F), noise (100 dB) (N), and simultaneous ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Noise Pollution Exposure during Pregnancy on Long Term Potentiation Induction in Pyramidal Neurons of Hippocampus CA1 area in Male Rat Offsprings
Background: It is believed that cognitive processing is easily disturbed by incompatible environmental stimulations. Many studies have shown that prenatal stress affects fetal brain development. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of noise pollution exposure during conception period on neural activity of hippocampus CA1 area in male rat offspring. Methods: Four groups of rats inclu...
متن کاملCatecholamine Contents of Different Region of Adult Rat Brain Are Altered Following Short and Long-term Exposures to Pb+2
Catecholamine is a group of neurotransmitters that is believed to be responsible for the normal function of animal brain. Physiological and behavioral changes of human body have been reported due to the damage of the brain function following lead exposure. Due to the assumption of lead disposal in brain tissue with two year for its half-life, which results in alteration of brain function, we in...
